Ursodeoxycholic acid, also known as ursodiol, is a secondary bile acid naturally produced in humans and other species through intestinal bacterial metabolism and, in some species, synthesized in the liver. It was first identified in bear bile, which inspired its name. UDCA is available as a generic medication and is primarily used to treat cholesterol gallstones, primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and other liver or bile duct disorders.
